Abstract

BACKGROUND:

Total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA) decreases pain, improves range of motion, and increases strength. Whether these improvements translate to improvements in activity levels postoperatively remains unknown. The Shoulder Activity Level (SAL) is a valid and reliable outcomes survey that measures the patient’s activity level. Currently, no studies have specifically examined the effect of TSA on SAL.

CONCLUSIONS:

Anatomic TSA and reverse TSA improved activity levels. In addition, disease-specific and joint-specific quality of life scores all had statistically significant improvements. This study suggests that after shoulder arthroplasty patients in general have (1) significant improvements in their quality of life and (2) have small improvements in activity level. This study shows that most patients do not have to decrease their activity levels to diminish symptoms to an acceptable range.

Resumen

 

ANTECEDENTES:

La artroplastia total de hombro (TSA) disminuye el dolor, mejora el rango de movimiento y aumenta la fuerza. No se sabe si estas mejoras se traducen en mejoras en los niveles de actividad postoperatoria. El nivel de actividad del hombro (SAL) es una encuesta de resultados válida y confiable que mide el nivel de actividad del paciente. Actualmente, ningún estudio ha examinado específicamente el efecto de TSA en SAL.

CONCLUSIONES:

La artroplastia total de hombro (TSA) y la reversa, TSA, mejoraron los niveles de actividad. Además, los puntajes de calidad de vida específica de la articulación y de la articulación todos tuvieron mejorías estadísticamente significativas. Este estudio sugiere que después de la artroplastia de hombro, los pacientes en general tienen (1) mejoras significativas en su calidad de vida y (2) tienen pequeñas mejoras en el nivel de actividad. Este estudio muestra que la mayoría de los pacientes no tienen que disminuir sus niveles de actividad para disminuir los síntomas a un rango aceptable.
